How I got an iPad, my Padme

“It’s the iPad.” This is a powerful statement from Jesus – I mean Steve Jobs – during his keynote last January. It is said to be magical and revolutionary. But how is this?

When the Apple tablet was launched, I had a lot of first impressions. In my previous post, I thought, Woah, is this going to dominate the market of slate PCs?

Three weeks hence, the market itself pronounced a big yes.

More than two million iPads were sold that time. Reports say that, now, the demand grew up to 327%. With that stat, the question that underlies is will you buy one?

Her name is Padme

Yes, I bought an iPad (and I’m taking back my previous words, ha ha), but the said market growth alone did not suffice towards my decision to purchase. Rather than I, seeking for rationale, the exact opposite happened. It was in July when tons of books were asked to be read to supplement our lecture slides. As many of my classmates would do, I downloaded eBooks and viewed them on my desktop, but I found that job very inflexible. That time, I was just looking for a mere eBook reader. I considered the Amazon Kindle, ExoPC, and the dead HP Slate as front runners to my need. The iPad wasn’t really part of the coin toss.

To cut the story short, categorical media broke me to buy the magical device. I categorized where my stuff should be put on. I have the latest generation of iPod Classic, which houses 5000 songs. Who doesn’t love music? For power computing and engineering work, I use my good pal HP laptop. For mobile communications, I have my S60 smartphone buddy. As an art lover, I do photography when it lies best – when I use my Nikon D60 DSLR camera. Lastly, I’m a game-boy. I love hard core gaming experience since grade four, and my platform evolved to PS3 Slim. Basically, my portals come from an iPhone tore into pieces.

iBooks - the new haven of my lecture slides and references

I added another dimension that can be outsourced to Apple’s tablet – an eBook reader that’s capable of holding rich media content and social networking, and at the same time, can do basic and smooth cloud computing (i.e. online and offline word, spreadsheet, and powerpoint processing). Also, it has to be power efficient so I can fully consume my Sun Broadband Wireless plan anytime and anywhere, at least in Mega Manila. So, at the end July, I purchased an iPad Wifi+3G model.

QuickOffice for iPad

For what it’s worth, I consider this as recourse to netbooks. I know, I know, I know – netbooks are relatively way powerful than the iPad. On my part, I never considered netbooks just because I don’t want my desktop be duplicated. It really depends upon what type of consumer someone is to buy his gadgets. Some people hate the iPad, some people love it. Of couse, in my case, I love it! And hell yeah, I enjoy using its 10 hours of battery life in school and key places!

I’ll be tearing down its features and some third party applications into reviews in the coming weeks. For now, I’m sharing some screenshots directly from my iPad. Thanks for dropping by!

Productivity will be my major concern in buying a gadget–yes, I’m a corporate person now, haha. And as far as I can see, the Quickoffice for iPad’s iOS looks pretty good.

Pretty? For me it’s gorgeous, as Steve stresses. Haha.

Btw, a special stylus with special software is being developed for iOS4. The idea is when you use the app, and write like how you write on a paper, it neglects input from the skin, allowing you to rest your hand.
