The Coffee Table

“We are in reach of our ambitions, aren’t we? Just five more years now and we shall be successful. I can’t wait to see myself in the coming future,” I told my friend Denverduring our discussion about our biggest dreams.

It was a fine day as we were looking outside thru the window of his house. I then asked him, “After you graduate in Ateneo, what could you likely be?” He answered, “I guess I have to pursue my law studies first so that I could be a lawyer. How about you?”

I’ve never imagined people addressing me “Attorney,” but sometimes I think twice of my dream. At times I see myself as a New York Bar Exam passer. How I wish I could reach that but I also consider my skills and limitations during this time of maturity? What I have are communication and logical reasoning skills. On the other hand, I have a poor memory. Also I am not a wide reader, and I am sometimes lazy.

I had paused before I answered his question. I took a sip of my coffee, laid the cup down, and said, “Well, I also want to pursue a graduate program in UP. It may be Masters in Business Administration or Masters in Finance. I really want to enter the business world.”

Yes, this is my ambition – to be a business man. I want to build my own group of companies. I wish to revive the Chinese business tradition of my grandfather. I want my family be proud of me. Moreover, I want to be successful in life, not merely in terms of wealth but in terms of the total hardships and attainment of a wanted dream.

“That’s good. You know John, you’re such an optimistic type of guy. The perfect thing to do is to plan first – make an outline of the things we need to do initially – in a step by step manner. A journey to a thousand miles starts with a single step,” he said while smelling the aroma of his coffee. He added, “Besides, we’re still too young to talk about those matters.” “Not really. Who knows? Dreams do come true,” I ended.
